Alice Wu is brilliant and this movie deserves way more attention and praise than its currently getting. This is the perfect introduction to this movie. Imma go watch it now. Most people think they will be happy and complete when they find their other half but I tend to disagree. First of all, you are already whole and when you find that special someone, he/she will be able to complement or add more value to your existence. No one should ever feel they are broken or not complete unless they find someone. Self-actualization, self-love and self-affirmation has to be front and center with you before you try to find someone. When you are ready, your self confidence will give off an aura that will enable that someone to see you as a suitable partner. You are you and no one will be able to complete you. Once you are self-evolved you will walk through this life upright and you will not need people as crutches. Once you find that special someone, he/she will walk along beside and enable all the good qualities you already have to make them shine even more. Not all people you meet will help lift you up or make you shine even more because those are the downers in life. They want to pull you down to their level because they have low self-worth and can not make improvements on themselves. Leave them behind and make room for people that will complement you and help you succeed in all aspect of life.

For someone who grew up as repressed gay, i can feel how ellie doubting about god and love. Same goes with aster. As a person who grew up very religiously, she might thinking that maybe loving a girl is a sin, and maybe that's why she stop coming to the church. Also i personally adore the relationship between Paul and Ellie. It warms my heart, really. I lowkey ship him with ellie too, and it breaks my heart to see ellie can't reciprocate his feeling because she's not into guy.
The Half Of It might not as good as Saving Face, but Alice Wu never disappointing. I love how she chose the perfect cast for her movie. Hope she can make another movie cause i can see how genius she is.

The movie paints a picture of a different individual; Ellie Chu, trying to navigate high school with her intelligence and simple life. It honestly felt good to watch the struggle as she helps Paul Munsky win a girl, Aster Flores. The simple quirks and stalking montage found myself loving how simple Paul's character was with Ellie's quick wits and the "Will she? Will he? game that plays with Astrid cluelessness to the game she is in. I really loved the simple life of each character in Little Squahamish.
But, the movie fell off at the crescendo; Astrid figuring out who really is the one she's falling in love with. Ellie became someone she wasn't in the first half of the movie, she was shy, quick with her words, and simple. Above all, striving to be simple and it was ruined when Paul found out (twice) that Ellie liked Astrid. Her simpleness was ruined when Astrid and Ellie interacted where Ellie became more like "the girls she disliked. It did not feel honest to her character.
Paul interaction was meant to be awkward. But there was no explanation to why he attempted to kiss Ellie, no explanation to how he understood Ellie's father when he spoke in Chinese, and no explanation to what his growth was. In the end, he just ran faster and was just a friend.
I think the movie fell off with its writing between the finale of how the characters finally interacted face to face. The lazy church scene with the popular boy; Trig Carson proposes was useless and closed off with a loose knot. There was a lack of the simplicity and honest-to-character motives that was lacking. It did not feel "different" like it hopes. It could have been more honest with its characters. In the end, it felt like a disservice; a romantic fan-service.

I'm so happy this movie exists. Thank you, Alice Wu and all involved. Thank you, Netflix
